Dyadic Theraplay® Certification Procedure
STEP 1
Complete Level One Theraplay & MIM training.
STEP 2
Contact a Supervisor and submit Practicum Application

Foundational Practicum applicants must have completed Level One and MIM training, be working within the scope of practice for their profession and hold professional indemnity insurance.

Contact an available Certified Theraplay® Supervisor here.

Submit application fee, practicum declaration, license, resume/CV, proof of professional liability insurance, and permission from supervisor.

During supervision your supervision case materials will be shared directly with your supervisor
STEP 3
Complete Foundational Practitioner requirements.

Minimum of 8 supervised and 32 unsupervised sessions* (sessions can be in-person or telehealth).

Certification requires recommendation of supervisor.

* Additional sessions may be recommended by your supervisor to reach competence at the level of practicum

Certified Foundational Practitioners can have their details listed on the listed on the "Find a Practitioner" page on the Theraplay® Australia Website.
STEP 4
Complete Intermediate Practitioner requirements.

Intermediate and Full Practicum applicants must hold a master’s level or higher degree and be a licensed clinical mental health professional qualified to provide psychotherapy to children and families. See Australian Professional Qualifications guidelines below.

Minimum of 8 supervised and 32 unsupervised sessions* (up to 3 telehealth sessions can be applied at this level). 8th session submitted is considered your Intermediate review and is sent to TTI.

Certification requires recommendation of supervisor.

Pay the Mid-term fee.
STEP 5
Complete Level Two Theraplay & MIM training.

Level Two training open to any Level One participant. Enrolment in the Practicum not required.

Can be done at any time. Though is recommend to be during the first half of the practicum
STEP 6
Full Certification.

Minimum of 8 Supervised and 32 unsupervised sessions* (telehealth sessions cannot be applied at this level). Last session submitted is considered your final review and is sent to TTI. Certification requires recommendation of supervisor.

Pay the Final Fee.
STEP 7
Maintaining Your Certification.

Foundational, Intermediate, and Certified Theraplay Practitioners are required to maintain active membership with the Theraplay Association. Learn more and renew here.

Certified Theraplay Practitioners must complete a PD requirement for active certification every three years.
Cost of Practicum
In Australia, there are two types of fees to pay for the Dyadic Theraplay® Practicum:
The Theraplay® Australia Fees
These fees cover administration of the practicum and certificates, Intermediate and Final Stage evaluations, and a range of other linked services and management.
Supervision Fees
These fees cover your Supervisor’s time, guidance and administration.
Fees may differ between Supervisor's and a are negotiated directly with them.

From January 2026 Theraplay® Australia will manage
Stage One - Foundational of the Dyadic Theraplay® Practicum.

The non-refundable application fee will be $150 AUD.
